When Women Walk Together: The Healing Power of Nature, Movement & Connection

There’s something sacred that happens when women gather in nature. The distractions quiet down, the armor softens, and our bodies remember what it feels like to move, breathe, and simply be—together.
This past weekend, I had the privilege of leading the Women Come Together Nature Therapy Hike at Schooley’s Mountain County Park. It was a Mother’s Day gathering, though we acknowledged right from the start that this day holds complex meaning. For some, it’s a celebration. For others, it’s a day marked by grief, absence, or longing.
One woman drove over two hours to join us. She shared, “After my mom passed, no one can understand how hard this day is.” And yet—here she was. Choosing to show up. To walk. To be witnessed. That kind of courage is exactly what this community is about.
As we hiked nearly 3.5 miles together, something beautiful unfolded: women encouraging one another up the steeper parts of the trail, pausing to reflect on the wisdom of the female elephant herd (who live in tight-knit, nurturing groups), and savoring the warm breeze and sun-dappled forest.
Movement and mental health are deeply intertwined. When we move our bodies—especially outdoors—our nervous systems begin to regulate. We shift out of “fight or flight” and into “rest and connect.” Add to that the power of intentional community, and healing becomes not just possible, but inevitable.
The most common feedback I heard?"I didn’t realize how much I needed this."Neither did I—until I saw the magic unfold again.
